Questions about art materials

I'm OK now, just got a cough to tackle.

Now I've been shopping for art materials today and in Hobbycraft I found stuff that I haven't seen in UK shops before - first are Sakura microns. Are they any good or should I stick to the ones I already use [Mitsubishi Uni Pin and Faber-Castell PITT]? Do they smudge when you use markers? If they're any good I'll see if I can either buy a pack or find them individually.

Next, I see that they now sell Sculpy. I've recently been thinking about making little charms out of clay and out of Fimo and Studio By Sculpy I'm having a hard time choosing which one. Both kinds need to be baked in the oven; I heard of a Sculpy that you can boil but they don't sell that here. Just want to know which of these are better, and when they're baked, they can be painted, varnished or whatnot? I've used Fimo before and unbaked it melted the paint off of my old colouring pencils. o.0

I wonder if there's anywhere in the country you could get Prisma...always wanted to give the colouring pencils a whirl but as for the markers, are they good? Or should I just stick to my copics and buy a refill for them once every three years?

I would love to find Sculpy... because each small color block of FIMO is very expensive around here...

The Fimo here is only about £1.39 whereas the sculpy is nearly twice that. But then it's getting all the colours...

Prisma markers are cheaper and, in my opinion, you can tell. I'd stick with Copics personally. Refilling is a pain in the arse but worth it.
:iconstaceyw:
Yeah I spent like, 9 quid on one various ink from refuelled.com including packaging. But when you think about it, my marker lasted for three years, and if there's enough ink in one bottle for five, that's about 15 years before I get a new bottle [if they still make them by then that is lol].

I use Sakura Microns myself :'D Personally, I love them. I used to use Faber Castell PITTs, and those are good, but my black always looked kinda washed out to me. I've never had any issues with smudging, not using markers or watercolor or anything. They have them in different colors now, and also in a nifty brush pen that I'm rather fond of <3 They come in sizes ranging from .05 which is like, super hair thin, to a .8 which is suitable for just about anything.

Indeed, I am a big fan of Prismacolor. I've used Copic as well, but my big hurdle is the price (But then, I am a super cheap bastard, and don't forsee being able to afford those fuckers ANY time soon) But really, it all chalks up to talent. I've seen supremely amazing things done with both markers. Style also plays into it, you can get more water-color-y effects with Copics than you can with Prisma. On the other hand, I think prisma has more texture :/ it's in the air.

I also really like Prisma colored pencils, they're very waxy and kind of crayon like. The only bad thing about prisma that unless you have a lot of them, you're going to struggle with some of the colors. I'm lucky to have over a hundred of them :'D My pencil collection is much much MUCH smaller, but I don't use those nearly as often. Oh, and about Prisma colored pencils, they break at like, the drop of a hat. Or feather :/ Not necisarily the wood, but the colored lead inside will snap into a billion little pieces if you're not careful with them 8D

So you guys don't carry Prisma stuff over there? Man, that's so weird to me! :/ We had prisma pencils in like, our classrooms, they're so common here. Copics are much MUCH less common, you have to special order them online, I've never seen any in a store, not locally anyways, maybe in a bigger city like Orlando or Tampa.

I was surprised to find that Copics could be found in Essex which is like really close to where I live, but there weren't too many and I paid a lot for three of them. :( Worth the extra costs though, before then I was using these shitty cheap ones designed for stamps and god the difference! The rest I just got lucky with on eBay.

Oh gawd, I got a pack of Karismas one time and they kept snapping like every five seconds, my poor white one's getting short because of that. For that reason I always used to use a stanley knife to sharpen all pencils I had.

The UK's really slow as far as big names go. Only about last year or so they launched Sharpies [which are awesome] here, and Sakura stuff I've seen for about a month now. You can't however go in any art store without seeing anything W&N or Daler Rowney, both of which are good.

That's a good price! Around where I am it costs £1.89 a block!

I've had unbaked FIMO melt the end of one of my plastic modeling knives before! I pulled it out of the bag and they had sort of melded together into a gooey lump.

Whoa, what?! You only just got Sharpies? Man, the hell have you guys been using? D: I love sharpies, but I can't use them to save my life. But seriously, I cannot recall a time in my life where there hasn't beenSharpies, that's so crazy. Man, what you take for granted!

Aaah yeah, I'm familiar with W&N and Daler Rowney, my teacher had those back in high school. I never used them much, though, she was picky with who she let play with them (and indeed, I was one of the few allowed) But me being the lazy girl I am just stuck to spray paint and prisma pencils :/

Speaking of prisma pencils too, those are a BITCH to sharpen. The only decent sharpener I've ever used with them was an actual Prisma brand sharpener (which was like, ten friggin bucks) most other ones just gnarl the whole thing up. I've used an X-Acto knife MANY times to whittle them down to something useable.

I never really thought of buying Copic on eBay, I should give that a go sometime. Are they really worth it? I've played with a friends, but not anything extensive to where I could really get a feel for them. And from what you say, it sound expensive to replace the ink as well (9 quid? I have absolutely no idea what that means xD I suppose I could go look it up, lol)
